Webzines mentioned in The NY Times
I came across The Business of Fashion blog today with the title that they’ve just been recently featured and quoted in today’s NY Times fashion article “Where The Fashionistas Go For A Quick Fix“. But that’s not the only exciting part, a few other well-established webzines have been mentioned, including:
- Gloss Magazine - which I used to write for (is it too hopeful of me to say that perhaps Mr. Amed or Ms. La Ferla saw my blog and that I wrote for them?)
- Fashion156.com - in which Susie Bubble regularly contributes…on a side note I got contacted by them but had to turn them down.
- Unvogue.com - Well-talked about by Malcolm Sirrah on his blog Cut, Sew & Blog/Change
- Glam.com - I think anyone who owns a fashion blog or site has been contacted by them
- Iconique - my first fashion webzine experience, gorgeous as always
- Net-a-porter - the famed luxury website where you can buy RTW
If you’ve bared with me since the early days of this blog, I’ve rarely plugged myself in other media besides Gloss Magazine, probably because I’m perhaps a little too modest to mention. I’ve been contacted by an array of people including budding new designers (local and national), writing for fashion companies, invited to fashion events and even (heartbreakingly) missed an opportunity to be interviewed by the BBC….THE BBC. Yes, I had to kick my own behind for missing out on that one.
I find this is such an exciting time to write for a fashion webzine or blog as they are gaining more and more media attention from, well, traditional and online media. That somehow, in this huge network of fashion sites, any time one of our “own” is selected to be covered by the big media groups or picked up by major sites, I find it such an honor and happy for others who get to shine and recognized for what they do.
So I just wanted to say a huge congratulations to everyone who really work in keeping the fashion buzz online alive
Investigative Fashion Journalism
I have been pondering about Investigative Journalism for some time now, especially in the fashion industry in which, well, few journalists have ever gone past the glossy pages or theatrical shows. And when they do, they write a tell all book and still get to keep their day jobs (eventhough they get banned from a few shows in the aftermath). Pioneers like those writers are few and I believe there should be more of them, at least on the Canadian side.
Newspapers should be your #1 source of an investigative piece of any story and category. So I wonder why is that nearly all of the Canadian newspapers lack this investigative approach when it comes to fashion? All of the spreads I see in newspapers are written magazine style: positive, positive, positive. The fashion police and faux-pas don’t count. I’m talking about real pieces with facts, numbers, statistics, interviews, the lot. I don’t see any of this. And if I do, they’re usually tucked away in the business section. This is why I find it so discouraging for any aspiring fashion journalist that their hopes in writing something truly meaningful in a Canadian newspaper won’t happen except on a rare blue moon.
It’s especially difficult when most of the news I get have an American slant on it, thus not entirely affecting the industry in Canada. The Globe and Mail may produce the highest quality in Canadian news writing but, to be frank, their fashion reporting sucks. How many more days, weeks, months, seasons do I have to read upon another review of the must-haves and yet another thorough description of the new summer dress, and how florals are back in style? Who cares? And at first I thought it was cool to get updates on the latest sales going on over at The Gazette, but after a while, I was craving for something more serious and less superfluous.
Fashion Events and Reports Galore
Don’t worry folks, I haven’t forgotten about you. Several posts are in the works for the blog, I just haven’t had time to edit and add pictures yet, so sit tight.
I have a bunch of updates for you coming up, and in a couple of weeks I’ll be attending fashion week. 3 whole days being holed up in a building for 4-6 hours at a time on top of going to work from 9am. There will be much to talk about, that is if I don’t drop dead from exhaustion first.
Coming Up:
- Magazine review for one of my favorites: Clear Magazine.
- Label Report: Michael Kors, Teenflo, and a tailoring spot called Charles Le Tailleur.
- Show review for the annual Casa Cares fashion show featuring a slew of designers including Dinh Ba, Rush Couture and Aqua Di Lara.
- Montreal Fashion Week press releases concerning several magazine launch parties.
- Most likely exhausted from Fashion Week, I’ll be giving the “spa” a first try, see how those Swedish massages fare.
- March 25th is Gloss’ latest issue! Hopefully it’ll feature my interview with jewelry designer Allison Sklar.
- Onsite reports being at Fashion Week, observing the crowds, and wondering how I’ll keep my sanity throughout these long hours. No show reviews, that’s reserved for Gloss.
In essence, I have a lot to say but not enough time to write them down!
